Session Overview

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy

Hypnotherapy is a powerful and effective approach that combines the proven techniques of psychotherapy with the focused, transformative state of hypnosis. While psychotherapy alone can bring deep insight and healing, incorporating hypnosis often enhances these benefits by working directly with the subconscious mind, where lasting change truly takes root.

How Hypnosis Works

Hypnosis is a natural and focused state of awareness. In this state, the mind becomes more open and receptive to new ideas, insights, and positive suggestions. It’s not about losing control or being put to sleep – it’s about becoming deeply connected to your inner awareness.

This state is not mystical or magical. Instead, it draws from your own life experiences, beliefs, and learned patterns. Hypnotherapy uses this unique state to help you rewire limiting thought patterns, build healthier habits, and tap into your full potential for growth and healing.

What to Expect

It’s a common misconception that hypnotherapy is something that’s simply done to you – that you share your problem, and the therapist “hypnotises it away.”

In reality, Solution Focused Hypnotherapy is a collaborative and empowering process.

Positive change happens because you want it to – and because you are ready to take practical steps toward your goals. As your therapist, I’m here to guide and support you, helping you harness your own strengths and resources to move forward with confidence.

The Process

Initial Consultation

Your journey begins with a free initial consultation. This is an opportunity to:

  • Explore what you want to achieve
  • Understand how hypnotherapy can support you
  • Estimate how many sessions may be beneficial

Hypnotherapy Sessions

Each session includes much more than just hypnosis. We begin by discussing your progress, encouraging positive expression, and focusing on solutions.

We’ll work together to imagine your preferred future – a life where you feel calmer, more in control, and empowered. Once we’ve explored this, I’ll guide you into a state of deep relaxation (hypnosis) to help consolidate these insights.

The Psychotherapy Element

There are many types of psychotherapy, all aimed at helping people navigate emotional difficulties. The approach I use is Solution Focused Hypnotherapy – a forward-looking, practical method that promotes calm and clarity of mind.

Rather than analysing past trauma or painful memories, we:

  • Acknowledge where you are now
  • Identify where you want to be
  • Support you in making the changes to get there

This approach avoids problem-talk and instead helps you move forward with purpose. If difficult events from the past have shaped your present, we respectfully acknowledge them, but don’t dwell on them.

During your initial consultation, I’ll explain this approach in more detail, including insights from up-to-date neuroscience and the powerful role positive thinking plays in creating lasting change.

Understanding hypnosis

What hypnosis is:

Hypnosis is simply a state of focused attention. In this calm, relaxed state, your mind becomes more open to beneficial suggestions that support the positive changes you want.

It often feels surprisingly ordinary – similar to daydreaming or becoming completely absorbed in a task. Clients frequently describe it as “guided daydreaming.”

What hypnosis isn’t:

Despite what films or TV might suggest, hypnosis is not mind control. You will remain fully in control and aware of everything that is happening.

  • You cannot be hypnotised against your will
  • You cannot be made to do anything you don’t want to
  • Your subconscious will reject any suggestions that aren’t right for you

In fact, we all enter hypnotic states in everyday life – like when you drive somewhere and can’t recall the journey, or get so engrossed in a book that you lose track of time.

Why do we use hypnosis?

The rationale is that as the mind relaxes, the brain’s focus of neuronal activity shifts toward the higher cortical regions – areas responsible for creativity and solution-based thinking – and away from the lower regions of the limbic system, which are associated with instinctive stress responses such as anger and anxiety.

The hypnotic state is a deeply personal experience, shaped by your unique accumulation of memories, perceptions, and learnings – many of which reside outside conscious awareness. Yet, these latent impressions can emerge in a distinct state of non-waking consciousness, offering access to altered modes of perception and inner insight.

Is it right for you?

Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can be highly effective if you are:

  • Ready to focus on positive outcomes
  • Willing to change unhelpful thought patterns
  • Open to a future-orientated approach

By working together, we can help you reduce anxiety, manage stress, and build a more helpful, empowered mindset.
